Stephen John Cottingham, age 65, died April 27, 2022 at Abbott Hospital in Minneapolis due to complications from leukemia.
Steve was born December 13, 1956 in Englewood, NJ to parents John and Ann (Frisbie) Cottingham. Steve grew up in northern Illinois and moved to the Twin Cities in 1969. He was a 1975 graduate of Anoka High School and an AFS student to Brazil where he learned Portuguese, joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS) and later served as a missionary in Portugal.
Steve went on to attend the University of MN and Brigham Young University where he received his Masters in Education and was an Industrial Arts Teacher for over 30 years. He taught students in Reeseville and Sparta, Wisconsin and retired from Mora Senior High School in May 2018. He was a favorite teacher of many students.
Steve was united in marriage to Marsha Morris on June 13, 1987 at the temple in Chicago, Il. They were blessed with 2 sons, Kyle and Cody. He was very proud to be an Eagle Scout like his father and his two sons. During his scouting years he attended the 1971 International Boy Scout Jamboree in Japan.
Before settling in Mora, Steve and his family spent four years working on a 10,000 acre wheat farm near Great Falls, MT. He loved the mountains and skiing when he could.
He was an active member of the LDS Church serving in many positions and always volunteered for service projects. His strong faith was a testimony to many and helped his fight against leukemia. He enjoyed X-C skiing, hunting, fishing, woodworking, his blueberry and raspberry plants, feeding the birds, the Twins and Vikings. He loved a rousing game of cards with his extended family and time spent at the Canadian cabin.
Steve will be most remembered for his cheerful, positive attitude and sunny disposition. His smile and greetings to everyone brightened their days and will be greatly missed.
He was preceded in death by father, John Cottingham, nephew Barron Cottingham, mother-in-law Dona Morris.
He is survived by wife Marsha; sons, Kyle (Becca) of Rochester, MN and Cody of Boise, ID; grandchildren, Brock, Brynlee and Tate; mother Ann of Mora; siblings, Kimm (Mark) Schneider of Mpls., Alan (Jane) Cottingham of Cloquet and Gregory (Lynn) Cottingham of Grand Rapids; father-in-law Arvid Morris of Cambridge; brothers-in-law, Jack (Jennifer) Morris of Mahtomedi and Tom (Lisa) Morris of Richland, WA; as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
